Budgetary Shortfalls at Two Jesuit Colleges Are Causing Some Drastic Decisions July 18, 2013 | By Matthew Archbold | www.cardinalnewmansociety.org/CatholicEducationDaily/DetailsPage/tabid/102/ArticleID/2380/Budgetary-Shortfalls-at-Two-Jesuit-Colleges-Are-Causing-Some-Drastic-Decisions.aspx Budgetary shortfalls at two Jesuit colleges are forcing some drastic decisions including layoffs and hiring freezes, according to news reports. The Cincinnati Business Courier is reporting that Xavier University in Ohio is suffering such a severe budgetary shortfall that it is laying off 31 employees and not seeking to fill 20 other jobs which are currently vacant. Those 51 jobs reportedly represent about 5% of the jobs at the Jesuit university, according to Cincinnati.com. No professors were laid off. This was not an easy decision for President Fr. Michael Graham who sent a letter to the campus community explaining what he called a “tough” decision. “I am sure that some will question whether we have compromised the Jesuit identity of Xavier University because the principle of cura personalis, the care of the person, is so very central to that tradition. I confess that I have pondered that myself,” wrote Fr. Graham. “And yet, the Jesuit tradition has always sought to balance cura personalis with cura apostolica, the care and continuation of the work. It was in that balance that I made these difficult decisions.” XU is receiving a record number of freshmen this year but has reportedly had problems retaining students. Reportedly, the job cuts will save about $800,000. Loyola New Orleans on the other hand saw its freshman enrollment numbers plummet this year, coming up almost 300 students short of where they expected to be this coming year. The university announced a hiring freeze, according to Inside Higher Education. “The nation’s economy has had a difficult time these past few years, and a lot of people don’t have the confidence to pay these high tuition prices,” Father Wildes said in an interview. Loyola New Orleans charges $48,700 for tuition, room and board.

The Apostles of the Nations

The Apostles of the Nations Posted By Brian Kelly On July 18, 2013 In teaching the history of the Church, Brother Francis had a simple system. Along with the many historical books from well-known Catholic authors that he required his students to read, he provided an expanding list of memory items that began with the twelve apostles (their countries of mission and date of martyrdoms), dates for the conversion of certain nations and kingdoms and the names of the principal apostles of those nations and kingdoms. I say “principal apostles” because most of the nations on Brother’s list had other saints visit their shores earlier and preach Christ the Savior Crucified and Risen, winning many converts from their labors, but they did not convert the kingdom or nation in toto, as a whole. With this in mind, I have added a few apostles to Brother’s list who were certainly preeminent missionaries in their respected fields, but who did not necessarily convert an entire kingdom. Some of the ones I listed reaped a harvest where other lesser known apostles labored in planting the seeds. However, as “principal apostles,” I thought Brother would be happy to include them, with qualification, in his list. In addition to these memorization items Brother Francis also, in the beginning, had his students learn by rote, without necessarily knowing anything about them, the names of the twenty popes who straddled the turning of centuries and, for the more ambitious, the names of the 266 popes from Saint Peter to Benedict XVI in whose pontificate Brother died on September 5, 2009. Memorization played heavily into Brother Francis’ method of teaching history. It was not as important as causality, but knowing specific dates of major events made historical facts easier to record in the mind. The idea was to have the facts on the fingertips of our mind for immediate use, rather than on the physical fingertips flipping the pages of a book to get the data. The technique was establishing relationships. Knowing the date of the naval battle of Lepanto, for example (1571), would serve as a link to the reigning pope, Saint Pius V (1566-1572), who summoned Christendom to rally to the cause of Christ against the menacing Mohammedans who were voraciously intent on the the further conquest of the western Mediterranean world and, eventually, all of Europe. The calendar date of that momentous victory was the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary, October 7. The victory occasioned this great pontiff to add the title “Help of Christians” to Our Lady’s Litany. He is also the pope who inspired and strengthened his universal flock by excommunicating the heretical persecutor Queen Elizabeth of England in 1570. What else happened in 1570? Pius issued the famous Bull, Quo Primum, which was intended by him, as a liturgical reform, to fix for all time the Missal of the sacred Roman Latin Rite of the Mass. Although he could not bind a future pope when it came to the Continue Reading

Life with the Trinity

Life with the Trinity Posted By Brother André Marie On July 17, 2013 Philosophers tell us that the essence of a relation is to be ad aliquid — “towards another.” In considering our own relationships, the most important ones we can speak of are those we have with the Holy Trinity and Our Lady. Elsewhere, we have considered the trifold relationship of the Blessed Virgin with the Three Persons. Hers not only forms a model of our own relationship with the Trinity, but it also enters into the causality of that relationship, so important was her fiat in salvation history. Those earlier considerations, which may be found online [1], lie in the background of these present reflections. Jesus told us that “No man cometh to the Father, but by me” (John 16:4). That is, no man has God as his Father without being a member of Christ. This is echoed in the utterance of Saint Cyprian: “You cannot have God for your Father if you have not the Church for your mother.” As Mary’s central title and most important prerogative, Theotokos, establishes her in a relationship with God the Son, so our central title as Christians, Members of Christ, effects in us a relationship with Jesus, which also constitutes us as sons of the Father and as recipients of the Gift of the Holy Ghost. All our graces as Christians flow from our relationship with the Mediator: “For there is one God, and one mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (I Timothy 2:5). As members of the Body of Our Lord, we are entitled to say the prayer which is, uniquely, “the Lord’s” — the Our Father. All men are God’s creatures, but not all are His sons. The Sacred Humanity of Our Lord is the nexus through which we enter into a relationship with the Triune God by faith and baptism. The foregoing paragraph, by the way, explains why there is absolutely no salvation outside the Catholic Church. The vital union we enter into with the Trinity takes place through the Mystical Body of Christ, which is the Church. God wills to sanctify us by divinizing us. He does this by making us His sons, that is, by entering into a familial relationship with us. “I have said: You are gods and all of you the sons of the most High” (Psalms 81:6). All this was made possible by the Incarnation. When Saint Mary Magdalene reached out to touch the resurrected Christ, she received this very revealing rebuke: “Jesus saith to her: Do not touch me, for I am not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brethren, and say to them: I ascend to my Father and to your Father, to my God and your God” (John 20:17). Father Feeney said that before the Incarnation, the heavenly Father was our God, and the Father of the Eternal Word; but after the Incarnation, Jesus can call our God, His God, and we can call Continue Reading

In Judea, the birthday of blessed Joseph, surnamed the Just, whom the apostles selected with blessed Matthias for the apostleship to replace the traitor Judas. The lot having fallen upon Matthias, Joseph, notwithstanding, continued to preach and to advance in virtue, and after having sustained from the Jews many persecutions for the faith of Christ, he happily completed his life. It is related of him that having drunk poison, he received no injury from it, because of his confidence in the Lord. At Cordova in Spain, St. Paul, deacon and martyr. For rebuking Mohammedan princes for their impiety and cruelty, and preaching Christ with constancy, he was put to death and went to his reward in heaven. At Damascus, the holy martyrs Sabinus, Julian, Maximus, Macrobius, Cassia, and Paul, with ten others. In Portugal, St. Wilgefortis, virgin and martyr, who merited the crown of martyrdom on a cross in defence of the faith and her chastity. The same day, the birthday of St. Flavian II, bishop of Antioch, and St. Elias, bishop of Jerusalem. They were driven into exile by Emperor Anastasius for their defence of the Council of Chalcedon, and there they went victoriously to the Lord. At Boulogne in France, the abbot St. Wulmar, a man of admirable sanctity. At Treves, St. Severa, virgin. And elsewhere in divers places, many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins. R. Cincinnati Diocesan Director of Priestly Formation Issues Broadside Against the Modernist Association of Catholic Priests

Cincinnati [Diocesan] Director of [Priestly] Formation Issues Broadside Against the [Modernist] Association of Catholic Priests June 8, 2013 Posted by Rita Ferrone www.praytellblog.com/index.php/2013/06/08/cincinnati-director-of-formation-issues-broadside-against-the-association-of-catholic-priests/ Fr. Martin Fox, writing in his personal blog, Bonfire of the Vanities, has issued a broadside against the Association of Catholic Priests and their upcoming meeting in Seattle, calling it the “Sad-funny-ironic swan-song of the ‘Spirit of Vatican 2′ crowd” (revised as “‘Vatican II’ priest group: forward or back?” at frmartinfox.blogspot.hu/2013/06/sad-funny-ironic-swan-song-of-spirit-of.html). Calling their agenda “pointless,” his dismissive remarks about the group, which has 950 members, highlight not only the generational differences between age cohorts in the American Catholic priesthood, but also the increasingly acerbic and derogatory tone that younger priests feel free to take in public when speaking about their elder brothers. In fact, it would be hard to tell from Fr. Fox’s remarks that he regards older priests as brothers at all, much less valued older colleagues in ministry. They are described more as if they are either enemies or a pathetic nuisance to be gotten out of the way. Younger priests such as Fr. Fox, confident that they hold the whip hand, now seem ready to snap it — on other priests. This attitude toward older priests and indeed toward an entire generation of the Church as blameworthy targets to be attacked, is of course nothing new to blogs. Significantly, Fr. Fox writes in red letters in the midst of his blog post “Welcome Fr. Zeee….ians!” All of this would be of little interest, except for the fact that Fr. Fox is director of priestly formation for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Generally, priests who are placed in positions of trust and authority in priestly formation are also regarded as role models for the young. (Fr. Fox, judging from his picture, is middle-aged.) Sadly, one reasonable inference may be that his Ordinary, Archbishop Schnurr, approves of his conduct and manner of expression and wishes to see it replicated in those who are drawn to the ordained ministry. Or does he? It’s not always clear that bishops read the blogs of their priests or approve of everything they do.

EWTN and NCRegister have a bad fall!

[They have been in free fall for some time] EWTN and NCRegister have a bad fall! July 19th, 2013, Promulgated by Hopefull cleansingfiredor.com/2013/07/ewtn-and-ncregister-have-a-bad-fall/ The title is “WYD and the Trayvon Tragedy” (has anybody else noticed that it seems always to be George Zimmerman’s last name, and Trayvon Martin’s first name used in the media articles?) which is a cheap way to skew sympathies. EWTN/NCR runs a picture of the 11 or 12 year old Martin, rather than his nearly adult picture, they ignore testimony, and set forth their own spin. While the title purports to connect World Youth Day to the Trayvon Martin events, the article gives only tokenism to an excuse to weigh-in against the decision of the court, against serious jurors, and to aid and abet those who seem to be pushing for racist backlash. Why should this bother me more than other liberal media? Because NCR seems much less concerned about truth, and much more about pleasing secular opinion. Media which calls itself Catholic should be held to a much higher standard that this article. I am so glad that virtually all the respondents take EWTN/NCR to task. I think the whole article and comments may disappear soon; we have to read it while we can. And, of course, how could this discussion not come to CF? UPDATE: You can’t read the article in its original, because EWTN/NCRegister already pulled their remark that the death of Trayvon Martin was murder. But here is the current link: www.ncregister.com/daily-news/wyd-and-the-trayvon-tragedy and you can read the plethora of comments dragging EWTN/NCRegister over the coals. Justifiably, in my opinion.

Weekend reading: homosexual marriage also 100% effective “non-artificial family planning?” July 19, 2013 Posted by tantamergo A Blog for Dallas Area Catholics veneremurcernui.wordpress.com/2013/07/19/weekend-reading-homosexual-marriage-also-100-effective-non-artificial-family-planning/ The following top-notch analysis by Michael Matt of The Remnant (www.remnantnewspaper.com/Archives/2013-0630-mjm-gay-marriage-contraception.htm) was recommended by reader TC. I think it might make stimulating weekend reading. It is a bit long, so I’ll excerpt a bit and add a little commentary [in brackets], then turn you loose at The Remnant to read the rest: Gay ‘marriage’ became inevitable when the post-conciliar Church seemed to renege on her infallible teaching to be the sole means of salvation; [Feeneyite! j/k] when the human element of the Church established an annulment industry to rival that of secular divorce courts; when even Humanae Vitae itself became too ‘radically traditional’ for post-conciliar Catholics to accept; when natural birth control began to dominate marriage classes in Catholic parishes (thus offering blessings from on high to the radically novel idea of separating the marital act from the end which God Himself had ordained: procreation). The “renewed” Catholic Church left the field in search for justification to join the sexual revolution (au naturel, of course!) and to find ways and means for Catholics to plan parenthood just like everyone else. Homosexuals didn’t desacralize marriage…we did! [Man, I think all these points are just incredibly prescient. Later on, Matt speaks of Theology of the Body, and is there any more program in the Church today that tries to "sacralize" the culture's hyper-sexualization than ToB? I know ToB tries to meet people "on their terms," but in many presentations on the subject I've seen there, it leaves them there where it met them, perhaps with a thin Catholic patina provided by NFP - in maybe 2% of cases. ToB fails to challenge people to throw off the shackles of wanton, unconstrained concupiscence, and too often simply tries to cover that concupiscence with Grace - a distinctly Lutheran attempt (for Luther assumed humans were utterly depraved, and all Grace could do was to cover our depravity like snow on a dung heap. Is ToB much different, when it leaves the root concupiscence in place, but simply directed a little better (maybe)? Mind you, I am referring to the popular presentations on ToB, not necessarily JPII's talks that led to them. That's a whole 'nuther topic.] To this day, Pope Pius XII remains the unlikely hero of extremist proponents of natural birth control because of a 1951 address to the Italian midwives in which he allowed for grave circumstances which might justify rare and limited use of natural means to regulate births over and above periodic abstinence. But the exaggeration of Pius’s position on the part of NFP experts constitutes a gross injustice to the memory of the great pontiff and utterly ignores the Holy Father’s adamant objection to planned parenthood, even of the natural variety. Natural justice demands that the abuse of natural birth control so rampant among otherwise faithful Catholics today not be laid at the feet of Pope Continue Reading

Finishing schools for excommunication

[FemChurch marches on] Finishing schools for excommunication Bay Area parishes continue Mary of Magdala counter-feasts July 19, 2013 cal-catholic.com/wordpress/2013/07/19/finishing-schools-for-excommunication/ Victoria Rue (in rainbow stole) On July 20, 2011, Cal Catholic reported on the habit of Christ the King Church in Pleasant Hill (east of San Francisco, just north of Walnut Creek) to celebrate the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, whose feast day is July 22, as a new High Holy Day. That designation was given in Christ the King’s July 17, 2011 parish bulletin by Father Brian Joyce, pastor of Christ the King. On May 16, 2011, Cal Catholic had reported that Women of Magdala had hosted house Masses performed by Roman Catholic “women priest” (and open lesbian) Victoria Rue. The Christ the King bulletin of July 14, 2013 includes the entry: “Mary Magdalene Celebrations-CTK Parishioners are invited to two celebrations of the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene on Monday July 22: A Mass and Breakfast at Christ the King beginning at 8 am and Women Working Together, a gathering at St. Perpetua Parish at 7 pm the same evening. Both are open to all. At Christ the King, Mass 8 am, presider Father Joyce, homilist Kate Doherty, breakfast afterward in Ministry Center dining room. At St. Perpetua, 7 pm, presentation (“Women Working Together”) by Professor Gina Hens-Piazza of Santa Clara U & GTU Berkeley, plus a brief scripture study and video prayer service.” Readers with long memories will remember that on May 27, 2011 Father Joyce’s pastor’s message contained an excerpt from a letter of Father John Kasper, pastor of St. Perpetua, in which he wrote “I believe that one of the struggles in the current controversy is the reluctance, even fear, on the part of a male hierarchy to open itself to the voice and experience of women.” It’s more likely that the fear on the part of the “male hierarchy” is for the loss of souls. Since Cal Catholic’s first article on the Women of Magdala, one of their members, Maureen Mancuso, has been ordained as a deacon and then as a womanpriest in the association of Roman Catholic Womanpriests. The ordination caused Mancuso’s immediate excommunication from the Catholic Church. Prior to her ordination Mancuso had served as an RCIA instructor at Christ the King. Another church which makes a habit of turning the Feast of St. Mary Magdala on its head is San Francisco’s St. John of God. The July 21, 2013 parish bulletin for St. John of God contains this entry: “Mary of Magdala July 22, 2013. As is our custom here at St. John of God, we celebrate the memorial of St. Mary Magdalene on Monday, July 22. Mary Magdalene was the first witness of Christ’s resurrection and the “Apostle to the Apostles.” The entry then offers a number of scripture references, and lists a series of woman whose actions are described in the Old and New Testament, then says: “The source of this material is the book WomanWord, written by Miriam Therese Winter, Continue Reading

Pope to Champion Simple, Caring Church in Brazil

[Hat-tip to PewSitter.com, which headlined it "Brazil profs: No 'doctrinal hot air' from Francis 'as in past decades,' or a Church that's 'a repository of the single truth'"] Pope to Champion Simple, Caring Church in Brazil Friday, 19 Jul 2013 www.newsmaxworld.com/GlobalTalk/vatican-pope-brazil-poverty/2013/07/19/id/515922 RIO DE JANEIRO —Pope Francis will portray his Catholic Church as a simple, caring institution and champion of the poor when he arrives in Brazil next week —a country that is witnessing an evangelical Protestant surge. The Argentine pontiff, a son of Italian immigrants, intends to place the message of the Gospel at the center of the Church’s vision, a move expected to resonate with many of the region’s faithful, experts said Friday. It is the Pope’s first trip to Latin America —and to the world’s largest Catholic nation —since he was elected pontiff in March. Faustino Teixeira, a professor of religious sciences at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora in Minas Gerais state, indicated that the visit would carry the message of a fresh start. “To stem the evangelical growth is not his goal. Francis is more of a pastor, more humble, more of a prophet who rediscovers the church of testimony, coherent with the fundamental values of the Gospel,” said Teixeira. This is in sharp contrast to a church which in the past decades had been characterized by “splendor, doctrinal hot air and seen as a repository of the single truth,” he added. During his week-long visit from Monday, the pontiff will tour a shantytown, a hospital that treats crack cocaine addicts and meet prison inmates. He will also gather with some of the 1.5 million youths attending World Youth Day (WYD), a major Catholic festival. He wants to be seen as “the Pope of the people,” sources close to the organizers said. “The Pope is not coming to Brazil to proselytize,” said Ivan Esperanca Rocha, an expert on religion at the state University of Sao Paulo. His goal is to defend the “church’s social vocation, return to the original church and strengthen the Catholic church.” Some 123 million Brazilians identified themselves as Catholics in 2010 —64.6 percent of the total population, compared with 91.8 percent in 1970, according to the latest census figures. By contrast, evangelicals — capitalizing on deft use of their own television, radio, and social media networks —keep on growing. With an extensive network of temples in which the faithful have a voice without needing to be ordained pastors, they grew from 5.2 percent of the population in 1970 to 22.2 percent or 42.3 million in 2010. The Pope’s message runs counter to what the evangelicals are proposing, said Rocha. “The evangelical message is linked to results, wealth, success and the church of well-being” while the Pope champions the values of St. Francis of Assisi, the 13th century Italian Catholic friar whose name he borrowed and who led a simple life in defense of the poor and close to nature,” he added. In addition, the demands made by hundreds of thousands of Continue Reading

[An official participant at World Youth Day] UN Partners With WYD for Panel on Youth Leadership Will Consider Young People’s Role in Peace Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July 19, 2013 (Zenit.org) www.zenit.org/en/articles/un-partners-with-wyd-for-panel-on-youth-leadership World Youth Day organizers and the United Nations are partnering to sponsor a morning of debates about the role of youth in sustainable development and peace. The event “Youth and the culture of peace” will take place on July 23rd. There will be participation on behalf of Ahmad Alhendawi, the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy, and a moment for presentations by five youth representatives, from the five continents. About 650 youths are expected to attend. The event will take place at the Brazilian Bar Association building (Edifício OAB), where consulates of the international delegations will have offices during the WYD Rio2013. According to WYD Executive Secretary Monsignor Joel Portella, the Rio week is an opportunity to listen to the youth and learn their expectations for the world. “The WYD has a very interesting characteristic as it draws the youth to look to God, to the world and to themselves,” Monsignor Portella said. “This leads to a great responsibility in the construction of this new world.”

New book on Cristero rebellion

New book on Cristero rebellion Published by Knights of Columbus July 21, 2013 cal-catholic.com/wordpress/2013/07/21/new-book-on-cristero-rebellion/ Knights meet with Coolidge (center) The following comes from a July 18 Christian Newswire story. The little-known 1920s persecution of Mexican Catholics that reached a fever pitch 87 years ago this month — and the civil war that followed — are the subjects of the newly-released book La Cristiada: The Mexican People’s War for Religious Liberty by Jean Meyer. (Square One Publishers: 2013). Long-forgotten in the United States and little-known even in Mexico, the history of the Cristiada movement is well-documented and preserved within this book with an authoritative text amply illustrated by more than 300 photos and illustrations, many of which are from that forgotten time period. The book follows the release of a major motion picture on the time period; For Greater Glory, starring Andy Garcia and Eva Longoria, was released in theaters last summer. Popularly known as the “Cristero rebellion” or La Cristiada, the uprising and civil war that engulfed Mexico lasted for three years and reignited occasionally for decades thereafter. The situation escalated quickly in 1926, when in July of that year all Catholic religious services in the country were suspended. Bishop Palomar of Tepic, Mexico with 27 fellow priests returns in 1929 after three years in Los Angeles The suspensions were in reaction to a severe government crackdown that curtailed the freedom of the Catholic Church, as well as that of members of the clergy and religious communities in Mexico. Public displays of religion were banned and foreign priests were expelled. Under Mexican President Plutarco Elías Calles, the government repression in the 1920s turned increasingly vicious as many clergy and lay Mexican Catholics were summarily murdered for their faith. In the United States, the increasingly brutal persecution of Catholics by the Mexican government was opposed by American Catholics and the Knights of Columbus. By contrast, it was endorsed by the then-powerful Ku Klux Klan. The violent nature of the crackdown quickly resulted in a popular uprising chronicled in this new book, portions of which were first released by Meyer in Spanish. Based in the United States but with members in Mexico since 1905, the Knights of Columbus worked hard to bring a peaceful end to the Mexican persecution in the 1920s by waging a public information campaign to inform Americans of the atrocities occurring just across the border. The organization also lobbied President Calvin Coolidge, seeking his help to end the violent persecution. Several members of the Knights of Columbus were martyred at the hands of the Mexican government, including six priests who were declared as saints by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 2000. “While we in the United States are blessed to be in a country ruled by law where our differences are decided in courtrooms and voting booths, we should not forget that not all are so fortunate,” said Carl Anderson, supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus. “It is heartening that this forgotten chapter in North American Continue Reading

Martyrology-July 24th Roman Martyrology-July 24th- on this date in various years- The Vigil of St. James the Apostle. At Tiro in Tuscany, on Lake Bolsena, St. Christina, virgin and martyr. Because she believed in Christ, and broke up her father’s gold and silver idols to give them to the poor, she was cruelly scourged at his command, subjected to other most severe torments, and thrown with a heavy stone into the lake from which she was drawn out by an angel. Then under another judge, who succeeded her father, she bore courageously still more bitter tortures. Finally, after she had been shut up by the governor Julian in a burning furnace for five days without any injury, after being cured of the sting of serpents, she ended her martyrdom by having her tongue cut out, and being pierced with arrows. At Rome, on the Tiburtine Way, St. Vincent, martyr. At Amiterno in Abruzzi, the martyrdom of eighty-three holy soldiers. Ricca case, case Sucunza and “Bergoglio’s style of government” – “Let us hope that Francis Meets No More Riccas” Text: Giuseppe Nardi Trans: Tancred 7/22/13 eponymousflower.blogspot.com/2013/07/ricca-case-case-sucunza-and-bergoglios.html (Rome / Buenos Aires) In Argentina, the traditional page Pagina Catolica commented on the homo-revelations of Msgr. Salvatore Mario Battista Ricca, who is the personal representative to the Vatican bank IOR appointed by Pope Francis, and Director of the guest house Santa Marta. The Vatican expert Sandro Magister has miscalculated Pope Francis. Had Magister followed the case of Bergoglio, say from the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires, he would have known that the current Pope would not yield even under pressure. Vicar General Joaquín Sucunza was involved in a trial for adultery in 2010 that ended in divorce, as had been requested by the Court of the betrayed husband. Since the court records protect privacy rights and are under lock and key, details are not known, but there is little doubt in Buenos Aires that the auxiliary bishop and vicar general was the reason for the divorce. Nevertheless, Cardinal Bergoglio held fast to his subordinate. Monsignor Sucunza was conducted after Cardinal Bergolios’ election to the papacy to the Administrator of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires,\ until the appointment of the new Archbishop Poli and is still holding his previous offices. Magister wrote on the 5th of July when he brought attention to the case of Ricca on his blog, two weeks in advance without detailed mention that Pope Francis was informed by the Nuncio Bolonek about Riccas’s scandalous behavior in Uruguay. Pope Francis had been confirmed by various sources of the information. The Pope was deeply disappointed, but also determined to rectify the situation that has arisen, said Magister. However, nothing was then done. On the 19th of July Magister finally published in Espresso with the unveiling of numerous unsavory details. Also presented in this article, Magister represents Pope Francis as deceived, who had been linked, because the dark past had been withheld from Ricca’s personnel file at the Vatican and had been cleared of all allegations of his immoral infidelities. The fact is that Pope Francis, despite knowing the facts, let two weeks pass by, which Magister left him to preemptively resolve the matter. Leo Matzuzzi, the new Vaticanist of Il Foglio tweeted the Ricca case: “Father Lombardi: Pope Francis had the opportunity to consider whether the allegations against Msgr Ricca were true or not.” And again: “Father Lombardi: Pope Francis is presented with accusations raised about Monsignor Ricca raised, but decided to leave him in place. ” “Bergoglio’s Own Style of Government” Jeopardizes Credibility What that means, but quite independently of “Bergoglios own style of government” as Pagina Catolica wrote, referring to Buenos Aires: Since the allegations are true, the Pope could credibly convince them that Battista Ricca has radically changed his lifestyle? Or is Pope Francis indifferent to concerns that a person of his confidence, which he entrusted with special powers in such a highly charged area as Continue Reading
